So very soon this Country will be hosting the most Prestigious event in the Sporting calender , and that’s our very own Olympic Games 2012 . The symbol of the unity of nations is the Olympic flame , this will be carried throughout the length and breadth of Great Britain , by Sports men and women and people of special mention . 1018 places to visit between now and the opening of the Games just 260 days away , and here in the South west we will welcome the flame of the 697th Olympiad.

(An Olympiad is a period of four years, associated with the Olympic games of classical Greece. In the Hellenistic period, beginning with Ephorus, Olympiads were used as a calendar epoch . In this reckoning, the first Olympiad lasted from the summer of 776 BC to that of 772 BC. By extrapolation, the 3rd year of the 697th Olympiad begins in (Northern-Hemisphere) summer 2011.)

So here is the route the Torch will take through Devon and Cornwall .     The flame will be lit in Olympia, Greece, in May and will then be flown to the UK on May 18. Its odyssey begins at Land’s End the 19th of May and finishes with a trip from Hampton Court in London to Olympic Park on July 27 for the opening ceremony.

       

Representing the inspirational stories of the 8,000 Torchbearers who will carry the Olympic Flame, the circles which run the length of the body of the Torch also offer a unique level of transparency. You can see right to the heart of the Torch and view the burner system which will keep the Olympic Flame alive on its journey around the UK.

(The circles also help ensure heat is quickly dissipated, without being conducted down the handle, and providing extra grip.)

The Torch stands 800mm high.
